CHARACTER AREA DESCRIPTION
This Character Area type is present in multiple locations: Holme Crescent , Leyland & Lachman Close estates and Beckside close adjoining the Trawden Brook Character Area; Boulsworth Drive estate off Bank Street where the adjoining Hollin Hall and Village Centre Character Areas meet and Weavers Court where the adjoining Hill Top and Trawden Brook meet.
CHARACTER AREA SIGNIFICANCE & EXPERIENCE OF PLACE
In both cases, the form and layout of the estates contrast sharply with the dominant character of their older adjoining areas, nor the wider special historic character of the village more generally, and therefore need a different design strategy. However, they have their own clear character derived from a very regular pattern of building forms and heights, roof types, and plot sizes and shapes.
Holme Crescent
- Oval layout
- Two storey semi-detached or short (4 unit) terraces of the same height and form
- On rising ground with occasional glimpse view between buildings of rising countryside beyond
Boulsworth Drive
- Circular layout
- Two storey semi-detached or bungalows
- On rising ground with occasional glimpse view between buildings of rising countryside beyond
Leyland Close
- Linear settlement distinct from other Character Areas
- Entrance from CA4 as building form changes from terrace to semis and lighter stone building after St Mary’s Church at East View
- Road flattens with steeper fall to CA4 and to East
Weavers Court
- Cul-de-sac layout with detached buildings set close to the road
- Distinct from historic character of Back Lane
- Trees and hedges in the front of plots softens the urban form

Future design management should follow the principles of With the Grain. The Character Area has some common patterns of roads, buildings and spaces that need to be followed but otherwise can accommodate schemes of a variety of buildings forms and styles.
